INNER CHILD

I think I had a pretty good childhood. I always had a nice pair of kicks and watched TV ’til my eyes turned square. I managed not to get terrorised too badly by some of the psychos at my hillbilly high school and my biggest fear was that ma wouldn’t let me go to the skatepark after school. Pffft.

But for some kiddies, life isn’t so simple. US booking agency Household Management and Abstract Logic Recordings have teamed up to release a non-profit album ‘Inner Child’ for Atlanta based charity, Dream House For Kids, who kindly care for children with medical problems. 100% of album sales will go directly to the charity and with tracks from the likes of Kastle, DZ, Stagga, Blu Mar Ten and local Mancunian boys Virus Syndicate you can get your fill of quality music and do a saintly deed. Everyone’s a winner!

Watch out for the album on digital release from March 22nd, 2010.

GET RAW

Dj Donna Summer – Raw from Nightshifters on Vimeo.

If I could be any one thing at any time or place in the world then it would have to be a New York pavement in the 80s. All those sexy & stylish people just walking, running and rollerskating over me…

Allow my hippyish, slighty sexual, ‘typing-out-loud’ fantasies and focus more on DJ Donna Summer. This Times Square/New York throwback video is a nice wee promo for his brand spanking release on the ever mighty NIGHTSHIFTERS imprint (out now at all good mp3 outlets) and Jesus, Mary & Joseph the tracks are a bangin’ on my stereo. Choc full of awesome original material and remixtures from Hostage and Bok Bok, you’re unlikely to come away disappointed.

We’re on a Nightshifters tip here so let me continue. If like me you like collecting mixtapes, be it for entertainment at the gym, soundtrack to pre-party preening/post-party binge drinking etc, then you’re going to enjoy this promo mix by labelmates JUBILEE and PROPER VILLAINS. From the studio, to the clubs to Mexican eateries they kill it… Download the mix here!

HEAVY BASS WORKOUT

Was one of your shitty resolutions a pact to lose weight in 2010? Be buff? Get a bang tidy bikini body? I’ve got a bit of knowledge I’m gonna share with you. Cop yourself a load of AC Slater’s guest mix for Annie Nightingale’s Radio 1 show at the T&B blog here.

With a whole bunch of heavy remixes, new T&B joints and collabs with Ninjasonik/Mumdance/77Klash it’ll have you throwing down a star jumps, squats and lunges in your lounge. I watched (and believed) far too much Newsbeat as a kid, and it told me dance was the most fun form of exercise. That’s probably why I’m always dancing on the speakers and hanging from the rafters. Heavy bass workouts man, big in 2010.

HOT JACKIN’ MIX TREAT

Wowo two very recent Contort Yourself guests, Jackmaster and Hot City, have been covered on Dazed Digital this week. And what’s more, they’ve both dropped a little mix in there too. Hot City’s article and garage rave concoction can be found here along with a sweet little CY mention.

Scottish music impresario Jackmaster lays down some funk, glitch and juke in his exclusive Dazed mix which is available here.

It’s in in prep for the Numbers takeover in Fabric Room 1 tomorrow night, so if you’re lucky enough to be in the Smoke and looking for a twisted party that will wear the soles off your shoes, then this is for you. Line-up stretches so far to even include melodic garage don, Todd (The God) Edwards as well as Hot City, boy of the moment Joy Orbison, Mosca and Jackmaster himself.

South Rakkas Crew… that’s Mad Decent of you!

So the nice people at Mad Decent have decided to give away the new album from South Rakkas Crew for nishmans… well nearly, you just have to sign up to their mailing list to get it. Get yours here: http://maddecent.com/stimulus/

Coming up for 2010!

BIG!

2009 end of the decade.

It’s been a weighty year for Contort Yourself. We’ve all drank too much beer, been pulled off the speakers by Paul for dancing too enthusiastically and ended up in a sorry mess in Kan Zaman, babbling pure bullshit whilst half eating/half spilling a Chicken Kebab. 2009 has seen some very important faces passing through the rave cave (aka The Roadhouse) namely Jack Beats, DJ Zinc, AC Slater, Riva Starr, Noob, Goldielocks, In Flagranti, Toddla T, Jackmaster, Hot City, Drums of Death…and definitely not forgetting an early appearance from La Roux, who were at the time teetering on the edge of massive mainstream success.

Outside of their regular fortnightly dance party, Contort Yourself were once gain invited to curate their own nights at longstanding annual Mancunian events Eurocultured and Manchester International Festival which resulted in bookings for Finnish bass-don Rico Tubbs, Top Billin’, Bicep and Gigi Barocco who pulled out all the stops and turned up a ridiculously energetic set dressed as… a frog.

The year also saw the return of the meticulously painted Drums of Death and Trouble & Bass’ AC Slater, who all made like ‘Oliver’ and came back for some more. Big up to Blackout Crew’s stunt doubles who came down to the AC show and graced the club with a front-row all-out sweaty topless dance to ‘Show Me Love’. Guys, everybody fancied you and wanted to have your babies that night.

Contort ain’t one to abandon the true souls left in Manchester over the summer, so a nice plan was hatched to carry out five part ‘versus’ series in which Sex With Robots, Now Wave, Micron, Naive Melody and Murkage came forth to bring their punters together and musical nouse to throw a doubleplusgood, no limits, head-to-head summer rave-up spectacular. Guests included Scottish electro wizard Hostage, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Turbo boy Noob, Rory Phillips and drum and bass turned house impresario DJ Zinc.

On a sad note, this year saw the departure Ric Davies, a core member of Team CoYo. He was a true Manchester clubnight professional and the bulging brain behind the clubnight of bygone days, Invest in Property. If you were in Manchester between 2005/6 you probably experienced the Invest glory days. If not, then oh dear, you missed some stuff. It was Contort Yourself’s big sister, and handing down the knowledge and experience for when the day came that she couldn’t rave it up anymore. We miss you Ric. Never in my days have I met anyone who can network as powerfully as you do!

To mark Ric’s departure, draw close on the summer and set September off with a bang, the Resident DJ team was expanded, and comprised of Will Tramp!, The Oldboy, Team Yeah and Natalie Esquire. A selected resident (or two or three) now support the headliner and bring that extra bit of madness to the dance.

Towards the end of the year, the rave cave opened its doors to Jackmaster and Hot City and although these weren’t the busiest nights of the year they still smashed it HARD, especially Dress 2 Sweat/Numbers head honcho Jackmaster who played a flurry of hip-hop, grime and funky hits whilst Murkage Dave took to microphone duties and a bunch of 6 foot models paraded around the stage. Look back on the photographs from that night (courtesy of Tomas Jones) and yeah, it looks like a truly indulgent booty shakin’ skank out.

Now there’s only one Contort Yourself left for 2009. But it’s a special occasion as we’re seeing in the New Year for the first time at The Roadhouse! So come join us for the usual dancing, drinking and debauchery all the way through ‘til 4am. See you there.

Oh and if you thought 2009 was a lot then just you wait for 2010. The line-ups are STUUUUPID. We leave you with a collection of our favourite tracks, honourable mentions of 2009 plus a few things to keep you’re eyes on for 2010.
