MAJOR LAZER GET YORKE’D

Thom Yorke, yesterday.
Well, well, well. Thom Yorke’s been a busy little bee on the remix front recently with efforts for DOOM and Liars, but this one takes the biscuit.
Far more dance floor orientated than than any of his previous forays into the remixing game whilst still being incredibly dark. Plus with Diplo arsing about with Tiesto and everyone sick to the back teeth of dreadful ‘Pon De Floor’ remixes this couldn’t have come at a better time for the Major Lazer camp.
It’s never gonna be an anthem but it might scare the shit out of someone!

MEGAMIX RETURNS
THE MEGAMIX IS BACK!!! I’m sure you all know the drill by now, but for those of you new to the concept here’s how it goes:
Each Night/DJ gets a 30 min slot to burn out the purest heat, all killer no filler, sweep the floor and get the party juiced in good style. The final hour results in an every man for themselves, Back 2 Back, No Holes Barred, All Holes Plugged…Megamix!!!
We’ve lined up another cracking night filled with Manchester’s premier disc jockeying power:
NAÏVE MELODY: This year has been epic for NM, with some bookings that can only be described as that of “legendary” status…. Smagghe, Weatherall, Twitch & Wilkes, Baldelli, ooooft! Anyone putting together parties like this knows what’s up so we don’t need to tell you that they’ll crush it proper!
EAT MY BEAT: Batty Bass, Wonky House, Tropical Techno, whatever you want, these boys can bring it… if there’s a party that needs starting they’ll be sure to do the job reeeeeeaaaaaaaaal nice!
TRAMP!: Tramp was one of our favourite Manchester Nights ever, but since its death William has gone on to make a name for himself in his own right as one of the best djs in Manchester, and deservedly so. Regular bookings alongside the biggest boys in the business has seen him tearing into the biggest clubs and even taking over the reigns of the world famous OPTIMO for the night and also warming up for some guys called 2ManyDjs!?
NOWWAVE: These boys know their stuff… they’ve put on pretty much every band that is cool and even those that didn’t even know they were cool yet. They’re so far ahead of the curve one of them once managed to high five an apparition of himself from 2 weeks in the future? Needless to say they can handle themselves behind the wheels of steel, (Especially when asked to stand in for Scratch Perverts on the main stage of Parklife?!?) so get set for some serious party throbbers.
STOP MAKING SENSE: Every time I see these lads play they smack it… Tropical Dubs to Spaced out Techno to Pumping Disco, these boys’ will be heating it from the depths of their collection for you dancing pleasure.
CONTORT YOURSELF: Yeah that’s us… we’ll be going in strong and fast jackin’ out the house party rhythms and durty disco thumpers.

SAYTEK LIVE – THIS SATURDAY!!!

In the second of our summer Co-Pro’s we’re teaming up with another Manchester institution MICRON for a one off special back in the 3rd Saturday slot! Last year we clubbed together and brought NOOB down to the cave for what was one of THE PARTYS OF THE SUMMER and this one shapes up to eclipse that!
Saytek has gained a reputation for many as the most exciting and innovative live act to emerge from the UK house and techno scene in recent times. setting himself aside from the click ‘n’ play masses, Saytek’s fully improvised live shows see him get hands on with a Roland MC909 , a Kaoss Pad , synths, a sampler, Ableton and FX to create a unique deep intelligent dance floor orientated journey that combines cutting edge grooves with Detroit soul, jackin acid and tribal percussion garnished with intricate melodies, left field jazz and Latin flavours.
His talent as a live artist Has gained him headline bookings at Fabric, Sankeys, mUmU, The Zoo Project Ibiza, Cafe De Anvers Belgium, Patent Blua Berlin as well as countless clubs and festivals across the globe .Fresh from the release of his second accliamed & massively popular Zoo Project album Saytek is working with Partner Cubism records who are re-editing and sourcing top remixers for his live work to create monthly series “Saytek Live
Remixed” the first of which is out now and already gained the support from the likes of Richie Hawtin , Anthony Collins , Steve Lawler and Laurent Garnier …

SBTRKT + Sampha

SBTRKT and Sampha blew me away last night… i mean im fully into Holy Ghost (who they supported) and it was amazing to see them play as their full 4 piece live band but what preceded them was something altogether more futuristic, just made what they were doing seem a little old hat.
Thier new EP on RAMP is killer! Lead track “Break Out” is a blippy little number with 8-bit grooves and deep housey moments all stitched together with a soulful vocal courtesy of Sampha himself. The B side is all together more mellow and laid back dishing out perfect for summer vibes. you can pick the EP up from Phonica on vinyl or Beatport for all the digital geeks, and its highly recommended.
For a little bonus check out this SBTRKT rework of Radiohead:

REDINHO

We need to draw your attention to a rising talent that goes by the name of REDINHO who’s been snapped up by NUMBERS with his debut EP waiting in the wings ready to drop very soon! I dont know what catagory this falls under, but it totally sums up the NUMBERS ethos and is testament to their tastemaking. A kind of ménage à trois of future garage, bass heavy electronica and soulful pop moments…. what ever you want to call it, the new EP is DOPE and well worth checking when it drops, not to mention keeping an eye on him for live shows coming up near you soon!

SAVING ME

It’s that wonderful time of the month again! Fresh free-ness from HeavyFeer’s ‘Stamp Beats!’ label in gleaming 320 kbps with this months release featuring the vocal abilities of Jon Rice and remixture duties by Black Noise.
HeavyFeet ft. Jon Rice – Saving Me
(Original, Club Dub and Black Noise Remix)
Released 05.07.10 – Stamp! Beats
‘Saving Me’ sees HeavyFeet take on the bubbling broken beat scene to great effect, focusing on pulsating, chromatic synth chords, chunky, live drum breaks and an array of traditional broken beat instrumentation as Jon Rice (recently compared to London vocal starlet Ben Westbeech) belts out a wonderfully simple, jazzy vocal hook. HeavyFeet’s own Club Dub is a further take on some of their favorite dancefloor flavours, tackling bashment, funky and breaks with their typical heavy drum sound and ever present sub bass. Southern Fried Records’ men of the moment, Black Noise, deliver a suitably styled summer anthem, complete with sampled disco vibes, funky club drums and select cuts from Rice’s catchy vocal line… it’s got Ibiza written all over it!

Drive U Crazy
This is fast becoming one of my favourite tunes of 2010… Egyptrixx is gonna be HUGE this year. He smashed it back in February when he played for us and was a thoroughly nice chap to boot! think the reason why i love this tune so much is because it slays the club, but sounds so chilled at the same time? what ever he’s on its some next ting so watch out for more from this guy real soon.

CHEAP THRILLZ

Come out tomorrow night. Bounce to HeavyFeet. Rave to Rico. Get drunky. Have a hangover induced Easter Egg binge on Sunday.
Cheap door tax and Cheap Thrills!
Ya get me!
Tough, Unique, Bad, Bold and Sassy… RICO TUBBS headlined our Eurocultured after party last year back in late May and blew us away!!! He produced one of the most captivating, energetic, colon rupturing sets we’ve ever seen and we’ve been desperate to get him back in the dance ever since. However due to a ridiculously busy schedule jetting all over the globe its taken us nearly a year to pin down a return date for him and to say we’re excited is an understatment.
Since the release of Gangsters, Knuckle Sandwich and his epic remix compalation last year, it’s been non-stop for the (ex) dreadlocked Fin, playing everywhere from Sicily to Moscow to London and Dublin. His tracks have gained overwhelming support from the likes of Sinden, Switch, Crookers & Annie Mac, who hailed Mr TUBBS as “MASSIVE”! With his current release out on Cheap Thrills and remixes for Trouble & Bass and his new label Bass = Win well under way, 2010 shapes up to be one of the biggest and best years for Rico.
To make this night go off with a bang we’ve also enlisted local bass heroes HEAVY FEET to work the booth alongside our residents. Having played for us way back in 2007 these boys have really made their mark on the dance music scene. Effortlessly combining a party rocking blend of house, garage, breakbeat, ghetto and house, HeavyFeet are at the forefront of the bass music phenomenon. As the duo continue to roll their ever-evolving sound out through a string of bass-heavy releases on some of the coolest indie labels around, Party Like Us, Nightshifters and Passenger, as well as leaders in the game, Skint, Trouble & Bass and Bingo, 2010 is looking like their biggest year yet, with remixes dropping for the likes of Zinc, Drop The Lime and Deekline, as well as the birth of the own label!

Here is a statement from the man himself:
“When I thought about launching my new imprint, Brooklyn Fire and the impending WMC I thought the best way to cause a stink was to get the artists whom I dig and have them tear apart something they consider a “classic”. Enjoy these 20 works and I look forward to your support of Brooklyn Fire.”

BANGERS & MASHED UP
So far, 2010 has been a HUGE year for the dancefloor. The bangers are EVERYWHERE. I mean, Tinie Tempah was number one without having to water his music down so much that it almost evaporates (see recent work of Chipmunk/Tinchy Stryder). And now Trouble & Bass come through with a wrecking ball, in the form of Heavy Bass Champions of the World Vol 2. Featuring tracks from the UK’s own Boogaloo Crew, these straight up bangers will pretty much flatten the club. You’ll still be dancing whilst the rafters are coming down. The standout is ‘Days Go By’ and the flipside, ‘Calling All Dancers’, has this crazy calypso lick and must be what dubstep would sound like it if was doused in Ting.
I’m a bit late on blogging this as Heavy Bass Champions of the World 2 dropped on Monday…so get copping! You can also catch Boogaloo Crew in Manchester alongside TRG, Monday March 22nd at Area 51 for Chunky’s Hit & Run birthday spectacular. Getttt in.

CULTURE SHOCK!

I know the ‘face’ of dubstep is changing, but now I just feel old. I have to check the release dates of my vinyl to remind me of my dubstep ‘peak’ cos my memory is in bits…it was around 2006-7 and I attended any and every few and far between crusty dubstep raves of Manchester. There were a grand total of two and they were choked with weed smoke. The last thing you would expect see was a feeble indie scenester or a blond girl grindin’ in her underwear. The girls were pretty scary and it generally felt like you might get a good ‘ol shanking if you looked at some of your fellow ’skankers’ for more than the appropriate over-the-shoulder several second glimpse.
That’s why this video is a HUGE culture shock for me. Rusko’s always dealt out the big room, crowd pleasing dubstep tunes. He wasn’t subtle like L-Wiz or Silkie and never came over all intellectual like Kode 9. He just did it ‘ARD. I’ve seen people have cardiac arrests on the dancefloor to Cockney Thug. The remix of Kid Sister’s Pro Nails was just stupid and I’ve probably wheeled up Jahova more times than a school dinner lady has served custard….well maybe not…but I’ve done it A LOT. I’m not on some muso ‘I was there, I know it all’ shit but honestly, but in those days of raving in dinghy clubs with sweat stalactites hanging from the ceiling like bad taste birthday banners…I wouldn’t have believed it if you even mentioned in passing that someone would make a dubstep music video…let alone a day-glo affair starring Rusko playing the keytar accompanied by a chick wearing nothing but the Union Jack flag. I would have assumed he’d been snared by Rohyphnol in his vodka tonic and been used as a puppet in some weird game. Times change and I’m not hating. Rusko’s tunes have made me throw my drinks across the dancefloor many a time. I’ve played them loads…but it’s just really hit home that dubstep is now in a completely DIFFERENT era. The roots are still strong and there are still many respected dubstep nights, but at the same time it’s become a student night ting, included in the music policies of ‘high street’ nightclubs and those gully ‘plimsoll and hair extension free’ nights I experienced really don’t exsist anymore.
I feel old. Bring me my zimmer.

INNER CHILD
I think I had a pretty good childhood. I always had a nice pair of kicks and watched TV ’til my eyes turned square. I managed not to get terrorised too badly by some of the psychos at my hillbilly high school and my biggest fear was that ma wouldn’t let me go to the skatepark after school. Pffft.
But for some kiddies, life isn’t so simple. US booking agency Household Management and Abstract Logic Recordings have teamed up to release a non-profit album ‘Inner Child’ for Atlanta based charity, Dream House For Kids, who kindly care for children with medical problems. 100% of album sales will go directly to the charity and with tracks from the likes of Kastle, DZ, Stagga, Blu Mar Ten and local Mancunian boys Virus Syndicate you can get your fill of quality music and do a saintly deed. Everyone’s a winner!
Watch out for the album on digital release from March 22nd, 2010.
