DETROIT BEATDOWN

Norm Talley, Delano Smith and Mike Clark come together for a special triple-header on this week’s RA podcast.
Detroit is generally acknowledged as the birthplace of techno. But often lost amid the mythologizing of the Belleville Three is the enduring hold that house music has also held on the city. The trio of Delano Smith, Norm Talley and Mike “Agent X” Clark, AKA Detroit Beatdown, have nonetheless flown the flag high for a unique, slowed down and raw take on the genre that could have only come from the Motor City. Supported by the unflagging efforts of Third Ear Recordings’ Guy McCreery and their own tenacious DIY spirit, the trio has pushed the sound in an official capacity for more than a decade.

The 2 Bears are set to release their 2nd EP after being given a helping hand from Red Bull Music Academy. If you dont know who The 2 Bears are then i’ll let this little video update you on that and the making of said new EP.
Their debut EP has been a big hit here at COYO Towers with Be Strong featuring hevily in a few of our favourite mixes of the past months. They’re onto a good thing, fusing vintage houes and garage with a more modern up front dance floor centric approach. BLAMMA! BLAMMA!

This dude first came to our attention when we got a promo of his “Beyond 17” track (click to download), which samples Stevie Nicks’ “Edge Of Seventeen” which in itself is a MASSIVE tune, and he’s done it justice buy keeping pretty true to the original, just strapping a sturdy set of balls onto it, drawing it out so when the vocal finally kicks in you’ve lost you shit and just turned into a complete mess.
…and what makes this track even more special is that it was created as an ode to his former production partner Martin Cole who sadly passed away with cancer in 2009.
We’re looking forward to more from this guy and certainly will keep an eye on what’s coming out, but unti then we’ve got this ace “Strong Motion” mixtape for you to enjoy.

THE MANY FACES OF RITON
Riton has craftily been one of the most prolific producers on the scene over the last 4 years although to the untrained eye you may have not realised his hand was involved in some of the tracks that have stormed the dance and featured heavily in our sets over the years… here’s a little round up of some of our Birthday guests Alias’
Riton and Primary One seemed to have joined forces in the last year or so putting out a couple of tracks together… this for us is the stand out of them all. Be sure to have a look for some of the remixes of this because there’s some belters out there.
Teaming up with Seji for this EP. I nearly shit when i first heard this, one of my favourite tunes that he’s ever made… COM-PU-TER JUICE! COM-PU-TER JUICE! COM-PU-TER JUICE! COM-PU-TER JUICE! …essential.

Riton teams up with “Ben Fat Trucker” in a massive stomping house outfit released on DFA’s sister label Death From Abroad… this track did proper buisness in the early days of our raves. Listen Here
This was his solo project from a few years back taking his productions on a cosmic kraut rock inspired voyage into the wilds of the cosmos… BIG!
Carte Blanche needs little introduction, but for those of you that have had your head in the sand this year its Riton & Dj Mehdi. They’ve summed up pretty much where things were going and what we wanted to hear… no more durgey riffs, no more wobble bass, just back to business with good old fashion house, disco and acid infused bangers.
-
Now i know you kids always want something for nothing so we’ve dug out Riton’s Essential mix from two years back nearly to the day… it pretty much sums up why we love Riton and also takes us back over some of the tracks that used to get rinsed in the cave around this time.

FEELING BETTER THAN JAMES BROWN
Clocked this on 6 Music the other day and I’m bang into it. My 12″ of “Wheel Me Out” has nearly warn through but i’d never heard this track before until the other day… I love the epic chorus and the spoken word over the top on the verses, not to mention the ace sturdy synth line. Now i know its not gonna slay any dance floors, but it’s just a great track that makes everything fell pretty sweet.

WHAT WENT WILD?

In another new and pretty much action packed topic that we’re staring on this blog we’ll be attempting to sift through our hazy memories of the last rave, looking at the back of record bags, checking out playlists and basically asking people that were less drunk than us to round up the tunes that went off and made the night.
so without further a do… here’s (from what we can remember) went wild:
Jamie Jones – Ruckus
Skream- I Love The Way
Mr. Oizo – Flatbeat
Shit Robot – I Got A Feeling
Kelis – Millionaire
Debruit – Nigeria What
Beastie Boys – Sabotage (Alex Metric Remix)
Jackpot – Brief Encounter

TRAMP! CLASSIC TRAX
1. Brooklyn Express- 69
This was a huge TRAMP! disco smasher that I still play on a regs.
2. Splack Pack- ‘Shake dat ass’
Probably the funniest piece of get ‘nasty ass’ ghetto booty shakin bass music I have ever heard. One of my dancefloor weapons I play when I’m drunk.
3. Chromeo ‘Needy Girl’
I could not do a list without including this track. Electro lover funk for the spandex generation.
4. Outkast- Ghetto Musick
This just makes people go a bit silly. Outkast are way ahead of the hip-hop curve.
5. Venom & Damage- Deeper
This is a new selection I have chosen, been going down really well in recent DJ sets. Uk funky with epic rave piano chords.

NEW AEROPLANE MIX

With the departure of Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca now flying solo i suppose this new mix is a bit of a statement about the new direction that he’s taking his productions?
“It’s quite simple, Aeroplane has existed a little less than three years but me and Stephen have been working together for eight. During this time we’ve started projects, stopped them, and started new ones. Aeroplane was on of these projects. The reason why it’s me taking care of Aeroplane is I’m more the studio guy and I’ve been really busy with the album. There’s no anger, no fight, it’s all cool. It may seem strange doing this just before the album appears but we could either do it now or after the album, we couldn’t do it in the middle. If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal, but we decided the album can be the start of what Aeroplane’s going to be from now on.”
What ever their differences this mix is one of the best they’ve put out… I’m particularly feelin’ the Everything Everything and Chromeo tracks in there!
1. Sweet G – Games People Play ( Instrumental )
2. Sarah Dash – Low Down Dirty Rhythm
3. Koto – Chinese Revenge ( Maxi Version )
4. Everything Everything – My Kz, Ur Bf ( Grum Remix )
5. Sheharzad – Yalla Yalla ( Kid Who Remix )

7. Omar – Feeling You ( Henrik Schwarz Remix )
8. The Chemical Brothers – Swoon ( Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Remix )
9. Goldfrapp – Believer ( Joris Voorn Remix )
10. Yoko Ono – Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him

TWEEK-A-HOLIC

All round smasher and NUMBERS boss Jackmaster just dropped this slice of dirty euro disco pop decadence the other day on the Numbers Podcast. It’s been going down a treat at COYO headquarters so we thought we’d share it with you lot. While we’re on the subject you should keep an eye out on his twitter ( @iamjackmaster ) as every now and then he jumps on board USTREAM and just gets oiled up and just plays out some of the tunes that he’s into, exclusive promos, re-edits and forthcoming tracks from a whole host of red hot labels. If you’re hooked up you can follow his station here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/jackmaster-radio, if not just keep them peeled… oh and he’s coming back to Manchester, albeit on a school night playing Hit’N'Run on the 25th Ocotber so stick that one in your diary! MEGAMIX RETURNS
THE MEGAMIX IS BACK!!! I’m sure you all know the drill by now, but for those of you new to the concept here’s how it goes:
Each Night/DJ gets a 30 min slot to burn out the purest heat, all killer no filler, sweep the floor and get the party juiced in good style. The final hour results in an every man for themselves, Back 2 Back, No Holes Barred, All Holes Plugged…Megamix!!!
We’ve lined up another cracking night filled with Manchester’s premier disc jockeying power:
NAÏVE MELODY: This year has been epic for NM, with some bookings that can only be described as that of “legendary” status…. Smagghe, Weatherall, Twitch & Wilkes, Baldelli, ooooft! Anyone putting together parties like this knows what’s up so we don’t need to tell you that they’ll crush it proper!
EAT MY BEAT: Batty Bass, Wonky House, Tropical Techno, whatever you want, these boys can bring it… if there’s a party that needs starting they’ll be sure to do the job reeeeeeaaaaaaaaal nice!
TRAMP!: Tramp was one of our favourite Manchester Nights ever, but since its death William has gone on to make a name for himself in his own right as one of the best djs in Manchester, and deservedly so. Regular bookings alongside the biggest boys in the business has seen him tearing into the biggest clubs and even taking over the reigns of the world famous OPTIMO for the night and also warming up for some guys called 2ManyDjs!?
NOWWAVE: These boys know their stuff… they’ve put on pretty much every band that is cool and even those that didn’t even know they were cool yet. They’re so far ahead of the curve one of them once managed to high five an apparition of himself from 2 weeks in the future? Needless to say they can handle themselves behind the wheels of steel, (Especially when asked to stand in for Scratch Perverts on the main stage of Parklife?!?) so get set for some serious party throbbers.
STOP MAKING SENSE: Every time I see these lads play they smack it… Tropical Dubs to Spaced out Techno to Pumping Disco, these boys’ will be heating it from the depths of their collection for you dancing pleasure.
CONTORT YOURSELF: Yeah that’s us… we’ll be going in strong and fast jackin’ out the house party rhythms and durty disco thumpers.

SOLO JACKMODE MIX

I hate the term “Midget House” that everyone seems to band around when talking about SOLO… It seems that every other day someone’s invented a new genre that last until 4pm that afternoon. What ever you want to call is SOLO is making some killer tunes and has been for the last few years, getting releases out on Sound Pellegrino, Exploited, Southern Fried, Ninja Tune and Deadfish to name a few, but this mix really nails home the direction he taking his music right now. With a frustratingly vague tracklist SOLO blends together jacking house, tropical thumpers and a few of those “oh so cool” retro vocal samples that sound like their out of 1950’s downtown speakeasies.
We’ve wanted to get him up to the cave for ages, but never been able to make the dates work so its good to see the lads over at Prostitutes & Policemen have bagged him up for their freshers special when the new terms starts alongside Glimpse, Julian Jeweil and a Manchester debut for COYO Fave Harvard Bass!
Until then get stuck into this mix recorded exclusively for JACKMODE.
