Its no surprise that we’re massivly info Azari & III but fast becoming another of our favourite producers is Nicolas Jaar. PICTURE HOUSE GOT THE LOVE

Picture House just sent us this tasty little nugget, that as you’d guess from the title is a cover of the ubiquitous Candi Staton number of the same name. I cant help but think there’s been a little Christmassy influence in here, well at least that or he’d been glugging a few Gluehwein’s whilst putting this together, because although the original remains true as a stout underbelly there’s a festive ping alongside the acidic pop twist that he’s created.
Check it out for yourself, i think you’ll rather like it, and while you’re here why not get involved in his recent mixtape as he gets down and dusty with a collection of his favourite records from all over the place recorded live… yeah live, on them spinny things.

YOU DONT HAVE TO THINK TWICE… TWICE!

The lovely people over at Traveller sent us a promo of the latest Kojak Giant Sounds EP from Brighton’s Maxi Soundsystem on which the lead track “Criticize” is an absolute corker. The more astute of you may have realised that its a edit of the monster Alexander O’ Neal club jam of the same name, but dragged kicking and screaming up in to a 21st century disco, complete with a throbbing 80s power bassline, housey keys and punctuated by those trademark soulful vocals. We’re so into this it hurts so expect it to get a serious wheeling out at the Mega Mega Mix next weekend.

A HOYA THERE MATIES!

Now i know most of you probably ran out to Piccadilly Records the day this bad boy dropped and scooped up a copy for every member of your family in an “Getting all my Xmas shopping done early” frenzy, but for those of you that dont own one of them spinny things its now been released on digital through Boomkat.
Here’s the blurb: “Manchester’s Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub present the debut release on their newly minted Hoya:hoya imprint named after the much acclaimed Manchester club night of the same name. By far the highlight of the release is Lone’s ‘Let The Music Play’, a unique sounding disco track with a thumping kick drum and distorted vocals layered to great effect before a rugged synthline takes everything down a notch. Illum Sphere, meanwhile, deploys a killer slowed down take on UK Funky which starts off with a trademark ambient wash and thudding drums before a synth reminiscent of his recent Titan 12″ on 3024 takes over and the whole thing collapses back in on itself. Rounding off the twelve is Krystal Klear with a very 80s sounding piece of modern boogie complete with handclaps and those apt crystal synths. A seriously heavy twelve and a perfect start to what promises to be a label to watch.”

at £1.95 for all 3 tracks you might as well treat yourself even if you got the 12″

GETTIN’ DOWN AND DUSTY

Lifelong Contort Yourself friend, all round nice guy and co-founder of Charity Shoppe; John & On has just dropped somewhat of a bomb on our laps. After putting together a mix for a friend that strictly adhered to the CHARITY SHOPPE MANIFESTO he thought it only right to share it with the rest of us. The mixtape is very synthpop and kind of darkwaved-tinged and, as you’d expect, done live on a very shoddy mixer with plenty of crackling and buzzing to boot.
THE CHARITY SHOPPE MANIFESTO:
• ALL RECORDS PLAYED MUST HAVE COME FROM A CHARITABLE OUTLET, FLEA MARKET OR FOUND FORLORN ON THE STREET.
• ALL RECORDS PLAYED MUST HAVE COST THE OWNER NO MORE THAN TWO ENGLISH POUNDS.
• ALL & SUNDRY ARE WELCOME TO BRING ALONG THEIR OWN CHARITY SHOP GEMS TO BE PLAYED (SUBJECT TO A LAX VETTING PROCESS).
• CHARITY SHOPPE IS AN EQUAL-OPPORTUNITIES EVENT, NO GENRES OF MUSIC ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST.
• MARVIN GAYE IS GOD.

MEGA MEGA MIX

![]()
Not only will this be the last Contort Yourself of 2010 but it also heralds the last Contort Yourself in our current format… With the New Year on the horizon, we’re taking a brief sabbatical over January returning back in Feb 2011 (same dates, same venue, don’t worry) but in an altogether different guise. We’ll leave it at that for the time being, but be sure to watch this space for more info early in the new year… so to celebrate the end of this year we though it only right to get stuck into everyone’s favourite the MEGA MIX, but with a little added MEGANESS!
The best Djs from Manchester’s Most awesome nights weren’t available, so we scrabbled together this bunch of idiots to get a bit too drunk and play totally awesome music right down your listening holes.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY
Thank the lord we’re half way through the week already.
Roll on Saturday for our boy Tamer’s club night Eat My Beat on Saturday with the wonderful Mosca.
EAT MY BEAT WITH MOSCA
The Roadhouse, Saturday 17th November
Mosca has smashed it this year, his fusion of bashment, grime, house, garage and techno making waves across various scenes. He featured on the first Night Slugs release, then later with his own Square One E.P, r…emixed Four Tet and Foals, featured on Fabric’s Elevator Music CD and put together countless mixes for the likes of BBC Radio 1, Fabric and many more.
“Mosca’s tracks are primarily built to power dance floors, but they are also deceptively sophisticated. They demonstrate an understanding of post-dubstep bass science while echoing the structures, textures and general sense of hedonistic abandon that characterised first generation hardcore”

Jacques Greene is an incredible hot new producer / dj / performer from Montreal. At the tender age of 20, he is raising the bar on the net level of club, house, dance music with mind blowing productions and a super slick style. However his Debut release THE LOOK EP drops next week (16th Nov) on Lucky Me and is seriously worth checking out! To wet your appetite check this little preview mix with snipits of all 4 tracks:

JUSTIN MARTIN

As you know we love a good bumpy beat here at Contort Yourself, and as bumpy beat purveyors go they don’t get much bumpier than Justin Martin.
Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground and mentored by fellow super producer Claude VonStroke, Justin was intrinsically involved with the development of dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases. Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs which flaunted a very unique sound and garnered still more respect among fellow DJs and heavyweight’s of the scene.
As well as his formidable arsenal of original productions, Justin is now equally known for his collaborations with his brother Christian as The Martin Brothers, producing such hip-hop influenced hits as ‘Duckface’, ‘Stoopit’, ‘Dum’. Justin has also made his mark remixing such bona fide classics as Radiohead’s ‘Nude’, Marshall Jefferson’s ‘Mushrooms’, and TG’s ‘Revox’, firmly establishing himself as the man to make big tracks even bigger.
As well as being a genius, he’s also mighty generous. If you head over to his Soundcloud page there’s a veritable cornucopia of sonic delights including classic tracks and mixes including his stellar Bedroom Music sets.
Here’s a trio of bangers for you to be getting on with.

CRYSTAL CASTLES / ROBERT SMITH

If you’re not signed up to MP3 of the day from teh lovely people at RCRDLBL then i would strongly recommend you do… who doesn’t want free music straight to your inbox every day??? Not everyday to i get involved but todays offering got my juices going.
When i first heard “Air War” i literally shit. At that time it was possibly everything i wanted. Crystal Castles not only sounded the part, but they looked it too, the graphics, the attitude, the style, they were the full package. So a few years on this little number has somewhat rekindled my love for these guys. The best comment of their sound i read once was that it was like “Listening to children’s nursery rhymes played backwards on Gameboys, while being showered by acid rain”. Cant say i agree more, although this ones got that funny bloke with the big hair from that band the cure sigining on it… its time to get involved.

UM OK, WELL STOP MAKING ME THEN

We got dropped this killer FREE track and mixtape from Stopmakingme to share with you guys… its a churning cosmic banger and, yeah, you should be! We couldn’t be arsed writing anything because we also got sent this lovely blurb that tells you pretty much everything you want to know about him and this forthcoming EP… read on if that’s what floats your boat or just pillage the goods linked at the bottom, but anyway im off brush up on my gully creeper and dutty wine, so i’ll leave you with this:
“Stopmakingme is well known for his residency at London institution Fabric as well as regular appearances at nights such as Bugged Out and Durrr. Now his star is set to rise further as Erol Alkan has hand picked him to be the resident DJ for his Phantasy Sound label, hosting their radio show and helming their new club night.
The EP is culmination of all things he loves about the dancefloor and influences he’s absorbed from London life. Arpeggiators and analogue synths; oddball Italo Disco big enough to work in main rooms; rolling Krautrock basslines and current bands like Factory Floor who have helped resurrect them; Hot Mix 5 hand claps; pulsing electroclash with camp vocals; the simplicity of ESG and every other early Factory Records release as well as the modern day electro he’s grown up on like Simian Mobile Disco, The Chemical Brothers, Erol and Tiga, all of whom he’s had the chance to warm up for, hands shaking uncontrollably every time.
Dan’s love for Trash, Optimo, Soulwax and older references like The Paradise Garage all come through in his DJ sets where electro and techno sit alongside updated post-punk, huge disco, mutant new wave and perfect pop choruses whilst no momentum – or any dancefloor – is lost.
He also co-runs the hugely successful Kill Em All club night with the Filthy Dukes, championing new music made by live bands as much as electronic artists. It’s a place where “an amazingly exciting new live act could blow the mind of a techno kid whilst an indie band in the corner think of how quickly they could sell their guitars and buy samplers when dancing to Boy 8-Bit.” In the odd spare moment, Dan also writes a regular feature for Dummy Magazine where he interviews others within his scene (as well as a few heroes.)”

THE RETURN OF BASSLINE?
Just found this bad boy on the Mixpak Records Blog. DJ Pantha with some stealth new bassline track called ‘Candy Shop’.
‘WHEN YOU WAS SLEEPING…I SAID I WAS CREEPING’
I think the majority of people hated bassline, but I enjoyed the MC’s with Huddersfield accents and dancing like this…

TILT SHIFT
We posted the new Mosca track, ‘Tilt Shift’ on the blog a few weeks back…and now Manchester’s own from Swing Ting boys Samrai & Platt have gone done a killer remix of it for your aural pleasure.
Mosca – Tilt Shift [swing ting remix] by Samrai
The Tilt Shift EP is forthcoming on Fat City this autum/winter.
If you like what you hear then Mosca plays at The Oldboy’s night, EAT MY BEAT, on 20th November. It’ll be way into Movember so I expect to see the porn taches in full effect by then.
