FEELING BETTER THAN JAMES BROWN
Clocked this on 6 Music the other day and I’m bang into it. My 12″ of “Wheel Me Out” has nearly warn through but i’d never heard this track before until the other day… I love the epic chorus and the spoken word over the top on the verses, not to mention the ace sturdy synth line. Now i know its not gonna slay any dance floors, but it’s just a great track that makes everything fell pretty sweet.

NICOLAS JAAR

Wolf + Lamb are releasing a free EP via digital download today, featuring six edits by young label mainstay Nicolas Jaar. Along with labelmates like Soul Clap, Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, Jaar has a distinctive way of tinkering with well known tunes, as showcased in his eclectic RA podcast (which debuted some of the tracks featured here). Behind these slightly altered titles lie reworks of New Order, The Grateful Dead and one of house music’s most popular edit subjects, Nina Simone. This one’s worth a listen whatever your stance on the aforementioned debate, as it marks a talented new artist’s first foray into the world of edits. And it is free, after all.

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE

Another one of my current obsessions is Motor City Drum Ensamble. He’s been around for a while now, but its just recently that ( and possibly because my music tastes have matured ) i’ve been paying more attention to everything he’s doing. He entered my consciousness as with all good stuff through other peoples mix tapes… Raw Cuts #3 was on a mix that Krysko put out a while back and i fell in LOVE with it, and as with Four Tet’s Essential mix that the Dj Sprinkles dub features on i didn’t have the track listing for either, which lead to some serious digging to unearth what the hell the tunes were! Low and behold they were both by MCDE… win.
I’ve compiled a couple of my personal favourites here for you to check out… pretty much all essential tunes that have been features in my dj sets for the past 6 months or so. Get stuck in and check his myspace for more info.

FRIENDLY FIRES / AZARI & III
i nearly feel of my seat when this little beaut drop into my inbox yesterday. By now you must know i’ve got a massive hard on for Anzari & III but teaming up with the boys from Friendly Fires was too much for me. I was a little worried that it may not work but as you’ll see this track is SO on point its stupid, fusing killer percussive punk funk with vintage house sounds they’ve hit the nail on the head with this one. Im stoked for them too as its going to be a massive boost for Azari & III and maybe when we book them someone apart from us maybe interested to see what their about.
But this preview comes courtesy of the lovely Annie Mac, name checking them as Azari & “Three” and siting their musical productions as “disco”… you’ll be pleased to know this features on Friendly Fires new Bugged Out! Mix which is due to drop shortly.
Until then check this out and droll over how fucking cool they are.

CARIBOU

Massivly into what these guys are doing right now and pretty much fallen in love with these two tracks in particular. When i first heard Odessa i thought it was another new project from Erlend Øye, but its not, its a project by Daniel Snaith of Ontario, Canada, and the more observant of you will have spotted that they’re playing the Warehouse Project on the Kieran Hebden night… here’s what they say
“Formerly known as Manitoba before a legal dispute forced him to use the moniker Caribou, Daniel Snaith is a highly acclaimed electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist from Ontario, Canada. A tutor at Red Bull’s Music Academy, he has become known for his ability to mix sonic experimentation and improvisation with accessible pop structures and vocals with dazzling results, a talent he has described as being linked to his propensity towards science and mathematics, holding a PhD in pure maths. Releasing several albums on Domino offshoot Leaf and Merge records, such as The Milk Of Human Kindness, Andorra and this year’s universally praised Swim, he performs constantly around the world, his live show famous for its bizarre costumes, playful sonic experimentation and dazzling originality.”
Cant argue with that… front and centre for us!

WHAT’S NEW COMA CAT? WHOOA-WHOA-WHOOOAOH

He’s all ears (plus some limbs, organs, fur, teeth and most importantly CUNNING)
You’ll be more than aware if you’ve been down to the cave in the last couple months that Tensnake’s Coma Cat is massive. So massive in fact that it can only be measured in comparison to football pitches (or double decker busses if you’re going for size, washing machines for weight).
However, nobody likes to repeat themselves (bar Soulwax perhaps) so it is with perfect timing that Round Table Knights (Contort Yourself guests way back in October ‘08 dontcha’ know) have sprinkled their brand of bumpy, tropical magic on the little blighter and spruced it up REAL nice.

WHAT WENT WILD?

In another new and pretty much action packed topic that we’re staring on this blog we’ll be attempting to sift through our hazy memories of the last rave, looking at the back of record bags, checking out playlists and basically asking people that were less drunk than us to round up the tunes that went off and made the night.
so without further a do… here’s (from what we can remember) went wild:
Jamie Jones – Ruckus
Skream- I Love The Way
Mr. Oizo – Flatbeat
Shit Robot – I Got A Feeling
Kelis – Millionaire
Debruit – Nigeria What
Beastie Boys – Sabotage (Alex Metric Remix)
Jackpot – Brief Encounter
Diplo – Percao ft. Pantera Os Danadinhos
Joris Voorn – Sweep The Floor
Tony Lionni – Found A Place

FACTORY FLOOR

I saw the name Factory Floor, floating about a while back but didn’t pay them too much attention, what a fool am I. They’ve grown on my so much recently every time i listen to them it confirms once more that what they’re doing is something fucking magical. I cant help but compare something about their sound to the likes of Suicide or Cabaret Voltaire, a sort of proto techno punk aesthetic that’s been dragged kicking and screaming up to date, lurking on the edge of a moody dance floor. So Its little wonder that they’ve got the likes of Erol Alkan and the Optimo boys foaming at the mouth over their prospects…
…Im not gonna bang on too much i’ll let you do the digging and look for yourself but these lot are definitely worth keeping an eye on and im surere they’ll have a manchester show shortly.

TRAMP! CLASSIC TRAX
1. Brooklyn Express- 69
This was a huge TRAMP! disco smasher that I still play on a regs.
2. Splack Pack- ‘Shake dat ass’
Probably the funniest piece of get ‘nasty ass’ ghetto booty shakin bass music I have ever heard. One of my dancefloor weapons I play when I’m drunk.
3. Chromeo ‘Needy Girl’
I could not do a list without including this track. Electro lover funk for the spandex generation.
4. Outkast- Ghetto Musick
This just makes people go a bit silly. Outkast are way ahead of the hip-hop curve.
5. Venom & Damage- Deeper
This is a new selection I have chosen, been going down really well in recent DJ sets. Uk funky with epic rave piano chords.

NEW AEROPLANE MIX

With the departure of Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca now flying solo i suppose this new mix is a bit of a statement about the new direction that he’s taking his productions?
“It’s quite simple, Aeroplane has existed a little less than three years but me and Stephen have been working together for eight. During this time we’ve started projects, stopped them, and started new ones. Aeroplane was on of these projects. The reason why it’s me taking care of Aeroplane is I’m more the studio guy and I’ve been really busy with the album. There’s no anger, no fight, it’s all cool. It may seem strange doing this just before the album appears but we could either do it now or after the album, we couldn’t do it in the middle. If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal, but we decided the album can be the start of what Aeroplane’s going to be from now on.”
What ever their differences this mix is one of the best they’ve put out… I’m particularly feelin’ the Everything Everything and Chromeo tracks in there!
1. Sweet G – Games People Play ( Instrumental )
2. Sarah Dash – Low Down Dirty Rhythm
3. Koto – Chinese Revenge ( Maxi Version )
4. Everything Everything – My Kz, Ur Bf ( Grum Remix )
5. Sheharzad – Yalla Yalla ( Kid Who Remix )
6. Chromeo – Don’t Turn the Lights On ( Aeroplane Remix )
7. Omar – Feeling You ( Henrik Schwarz Remix )
8. The Chemical Brothers – Swoon ( Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Remix )
9. Goldfrapp – Believer ( Joris Voorn Remix )
10. Yoko Ono – Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him
